Malaria Prevention


For each Antimalarials Medications order, you must complete the ABC Travel Online Consultation (on each of the Antimalarials Medications pages ) to determine your suitability to take Antimalarials.

Antimalarials are not 100% effective. It’s important you use insect repellent creams/lotions/sprays to protect yourself.

  • Atovaquone/Proguanil (Generic Malarone) – One tablet of Atovaquone/Proguanil should be taken every day; start one day before exposure, and continue seven days after – £37.50
  • Chloroquine – Two tablets of Avloclor (Chloroquine) should be taken together every week; start one week before exposure and continue for four weeks after returning. Avloclor (Chloroquine) tablets are used to prevent malaria. They are effective in only a few countries, mainly in Central America and should not be used to prevent malaria in Africa, South East Asia or South America.  Avloclor can be used in conjuction with Paludrine (Proguanil Tablets) to prevent malaria in India which are also available as a combined Paludrine and Avloclor Travel Pack. – £19.50
  • Doxycycline 100mg – One tablet of Doxycycline should be taken every day; start two days before, and continue for 28 days after – £37.50
  • Duo pack (Chloroquine tabs PLUS Proguanil  ) Two tablets of Avloclor (Chloroquine) should be taken together every week; start one week before exposure and continue for four weeks after returning. Avloclor (Chloroquine) tablets are used to prevent malaria. They are effective in only a few countries, mainly in Central America and should not be used to prevent malaria in Africa, South East Asia or South America. Avloclor can be used in conjuction with Paludrine (Proguanil Tablets) to prevent malaria in India which are also available as a combined Paludrine and Avloclor Travel Pack. Two tablets of Proguanil should be taken together at the same time every day; start one week before, and continue for four weeks after  – £40
